Note: This is a guide; in a battle, things can change. Always pay attention to the chat and be ready for instructions from the battle leader.

Viking Vengeance is a defensive survival event. Waves of Vikings attack your settlement, each wave becoming stronger, faster, and more punishing. Your goal is to survive as long as possible, deal maximum damage, and avoid the common mistakes that cause early wipeouts.

Use this guide to understand how the event works and what your role should be during the waves.

Team Play

Because this event relies on help from alliance teammates, pre-event communication is essential. Please be online 15 minutes BEFORE the event starts to coordinate troop swaps.

The Waves:

Viking Vengeance runs for about 40 minutes and sends 20 waves of Vikings. The targeting pattern looks like this:

  • Waves 1–6: All members
  • Wave 7: Online members only
  • Waves 8–9: All members
  • Wave 10: Headquarters (HQ)
  • Waves 11–13: All members
  • Wave 14: Online members only
  • Waves 15–16: All members
  • Wave 17: Online members only
  • Waves 18–19: All members
  • Wave 20: Headquarters (HQ)

The goal is simple: kill as many Vikings as possible while keeping key cities and HQ from burning out.

Key mechanics
Empty city, reinforce others:

For scoring, defending your own city is not efficient:

  • You get fixed defense points for surviving a wave, no matter how many kills your troops get.
  • When you reinforce someone else, you earn points from your kills on top of the base defense points they receive.

If you have more troops than your marches can hold, send out Infantry + Cavalry first and leave Archers at home. Archers get fewer kills and are less likely to steal points from allies.

Three golden rules (for most players)
  • Empty city: get your fighting troops out as reinforcements.
  • No healing during active waves:  healing pulls troops back into your city, where they steal kills.
  • No fire extinguishing during waves:  do not panic and recall reinforcements just because you got burned once.
What to do?
In YOUR city
  • Keep your best heroes on your barricade in your own city. (Amadeus, Helga, Howard, Jabel, Saul, Quinn.)
  • Do not send those main heroes out when reinforcing others. Your city still uses those heroes for defense when others reinforce you.
  • Ideally, you reach a point where you have zero or very few troops at home, and almost all the killing is done by reinforcements for maximum alliance points.

If you cannot attend the event at all keep troops at home so you do not burn on wave one with no reinforcements.

Reinforcing OTHER cities
  • Stay online. If you go offline, waves 7, 14, and 17 will skip you. You won’t get points, and those who reinforce you will not either.
  • Use VI+ troops whenever you can.
  • March setup for Vikings is infantry-heavy, then cavalry. (Target ratio: 60% Infantry / 40% Cavalry / 0% Archers.)
  • Infantry attack first and do most of the killing, which means more points for you.
Troop HQ waves and positioning

HQ is only directly targeted at Wave 10 and Wave 20. Battle leaders (R5/R4s) will assign teams to guard the HQ at levels 10 and 20 before each Viking Vengeance event. PLEASE BE ONLINE 15 MINUTES BEFORE THE EVENT STARTS.

Healing, burning, and “panic moves.”
  • Do not heal mid-event unless your lead calls it. Healing yanks troops back into your city and ruins reinforcement setups. WE CAN’T STRESS THIS ENOUGH!
  • If your city burns once, do not panic and recall everybody. As long as troop trades are even, the damage taken is shared fairly, and points keep flowing.
ALWAYS be on the lookout for battle instructions from your R5/R4s in chat!
